Mandeville’s new beach on Lake Pontchartrain is scheduled to open to the public tomorrow, March 11th. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 9am and the first 100 children will receive a free beach bucket and shovel, says Mayor Donald Villere.
Construction on the beach cost the city $86,750, and is a bit controversial.
The Mandeville Lakefront is a 1 1/2 mile stretch of scenic waterfront views in historic Old Mandeville including a walking path, live oaks, a gazebo, two parks, and access to several restaurants.
The beach is located at the East end of Lakeshore Drive at Jackson Ave. The beach extends about 100 feet into Lake Pontchartrain from the existing seawall across Lakeshore from the Pontchartrain Yacht Club, adjacent to the lakefront children’s playground and splash park.
It is sure to be a much visited spot year round.
